mommy of the week: melanie o.


Melanie has trained at our High Park location with her daughter for nearly a year, and joined us while pregnant the first time with her son. She likes to roll her eyes but never complains, so we know she secretly loves BB.  ;)  Thanks, Mel!

What brought you to BB? How long did you train?

I found BB on-line when I was 3 months pregnant with my first baby. I had finally come to the conclusion that playing hockey was not a good idea while pregnant! I felt that I should maintain what I had and BB was perfect! While I was scared seeing the other mommas more prego than me depart weekly, knowing my turn was next, it was nice to chat. Postnatally, it's been great to chat with other sleep-deprived moms and know that you are not alone. I'm so grateful for the camaraderie, which helps to get through some tough days and workouts! In total I've trained at BB for 6 months prenatal + 10 months post with baby #1 and 11 months at twice/week with baby #2!

What results have you experienced?

I've been able to maintain a healthy body weight and - most recently, since increasing to 2 classes per week - the results are OUTSTANDING. I feel super strong and have noticed that all those squats and lunges I did all winter have really paid off; now that we're outdoors, I've noticed I have more power and it's reminded me of the joy I used to experience not only running, but exercising outdoors.

How do you stay active outside of BB?

Um...I have two kids! No seriously, we like the park and we try to get both kids in the pool once a week. Also my daughter and I took a swimming/water aerobics once a week, which was mutually beneficial!

What is your #1 fitness goal now?

I think I'd like to see myself return to running regularly and do some 5Ks at least.

Fave healthy food?

Chocolate?! I like avocados. I got some e-mail about how they balance hormones and help you drop weight and I swear that it's true! I also think they have helped me when I can't stop craving chocolate!

Fave exercise?

I don't really "like" any of them...I like what they do! Anything where I can be a little crazy and make my daughter laugh at me. Outside this my favourite is butt kicks, while she rides along in the stroller.

Exercise you want to punch in the face?

For sure burpees!! I'd rather run up the hill at High Park 10 times than do 10 burpees.

Last splurge food or drink?

Always chocolate. My whole family are chocoholics. Unfortunately, we've passed this to our son, who now thinks he has a chocolate baby in his tummy...oops!
